Got questions? We've got answers. If you don't see your answer below,
contact us and we'll do our best to assist.
1)
What can be monitored?
Websites, mail servers, routers, FTP servers, DNS, TCP/IP ports, anything
that replies to Pings, and MS SQL Databases
2) How often do you check?
That's up to you. We can check as often as every minute or so, or every 30
minutes. See pricing for more information
3) Can I try before I buy?
Absolutely. You can test it right now without any commitment, or needing a
credit card.
4) Explain "Public" vs "Private" agents to me
Public agents are used to monitor objects that are accessible from the
Internet. Examples would be your website, your mailserver, FTP server etc.
Private agents are optional, free, and would be installed on a Windows
server inside your network. Those agents provide monitoring of objects
inside your network that are not exposed/reachable from the outside, and
are also used for tests that require only one positive to trigger an alarm
(Like a DNS RBL positive for your mail server).
Examples of use for internal testing may include pinging an internal email server, database server, file
server, printers, workstations etc.
5) How am I notified if something is down?
We offer a self-refreshing web page with a dark background to be kind to
your monitor. That page can list every object you monitor, show you
current status, and will also issue an audible alarm if an object is down
for more than 30 seconds. We also alert via Email, or SMS.
6) Do you have many false alarms?
No. We use an "election" system with public agents, which vote on whether
your monitored service is actually down.
= All agents see
your object as "UP"
= Some agents,
but less than 50%, see your object as "DOWN"
= Most, or all
agents, see your object as "DOWN"
7)
Can I disable monitoring while I work on a server or object?
Yes - you can turn of monitoring on a per-object basis through our control
panel
8) Can I set how long after a "DOWN" I am alerted
via email or SMS?
Yes - We send alerts based on "Cycles down" - So on a 3 minute cycle
probe, you can be notified immediately, or after 3 minutes, 6 minutes, 9
minutes etc.
9) Do you send reminders if something is down?
Yes - You can specify if you would like to receive reminder "nag" alerts
while an object continues to be "DOWN" - Use caution if you choose to be
alerted by SMS though. It can get costly.
10) Do I get to specify different email addresses
to notify on a per-object basis?
Yes - each object you monitor has its own, totally independent
notification settings
11) Can objects be grouped together for
organizational purposes?
Yes - You can define groups while creating objects, and then assign other
objects to groups to help manage large installations
12) Is there any software to install?
No - The monitoring system is cloud-based. However, if you would like to
monitor objects behind your firewall (a critical printer, database server
etc) we do offer a FREE internal probe that you can download. It installs
in about 5 seconds, and you still configure it via the XRay website.
13) Is there any limit to the number of items I
can monitor?
No - We are scalable. You can monitor as many objects as you wish.
14) What fault-tolerance is built into XRay?
Our main data center houses the website and central systems. However, the
monitoring service has been designed to run indefinitely decapitated. This
means that there is no single point of failure, making our system very
robust and less likely to go dark in the event of an outage.
